Help Children Deal with Panic Attack in Darkness

By Garyl Hany

Children usually have their nightmares. Since they have a very imaginative mind, they usually create something out of their nightmares and they would see these things as real. The fear will slowly devour them and they would scream every night as if the nightmare is real. This is a typical reaction of a child but it is not suppose to be this way. In fact if it is not handled immediately, panic attacks will hunt the child every night.

At night, panic attack in children is common. This seems natural because some children are afraid of the dark. More often, panic attack will hit the child after he woke up from a nightmare. While the child is having a nightmare, his stress level is already fluctuating significantly. When he woke up and found himself alone in the darkness, he will burst into tears. This means that the child is having a panic attack.

As parents, we must understand that children need to cope up first before they are left alone. Our children have to learn independency or else they will suffer from constant panic attack. Keep in mind that we should never force a child to cope with darkness. Slowly introduce him into the dark that it is a friend. Otherwise, the child will get hyperventilated every time he is in the dark.

In addition, don't let your child eat unhealthy foods. These foods do not contain enough essential nutrients to make his brain function properly. Give him only the best and assure that the foods he eats are highly nutritious. Also, keep in mind that there are foods that should be avoided before sleeping. These foods are heavy for the tummy and some people believe that they might cause nightmares.

Furthermore, we shouldn't contribute to our children's anxiety. It is never a good idea to threaten the children with monster in the closet and under the bed.

If your child sleeping habit is already affected, it is highly recommended that you let someone check him out. Otherwise, panic attack will hunt your child until he gets old. He won't get over it and his fear will control his life forever unless treated. - 30415
